Old College Days Looks
Since Covid, we have thrown ourselves into the dangerous uncharted waters of online shopping. It seems we’re clicking on every promotion email and indulging every sale that our favorite sites offer and purchasing anything and everything we don’t need. Our usual thrift and vintage stores are either temporarily closed or have sadly gone out of business, so what do you expect a girl to do? We’ve decided we need to get our head out of our laptops and into what we already own and open up a little thrift shop of our own. Well basically, we need to stick with what we already have and do a bit of repurposing ourselves.
Today we’re digging through some of our old college days looks. Oversized denim jackets, boyfriend jeans and crop tops galore and we’re wondering why we kept any of this sh*t?! Then we see it, our old, go-to, reliable slip dress. A nude colored, lace-lined dress that was our faithful servant for house parties, dates and girl’s night out. It’s that garment that served so many purposes and so many occasions and appears to have a few more wears in her so we’re going to try and style this to fit our more mature modern lifestyle.
Because this dress has such a great nude, basic color it's easy to style with other pieces in our closet. For one, we would love to style this dress in a way that would be suitable for daytime. Perhaps it's for school, work or just a day about town, this dress can be styled with some casual or edgy (or both) pieces to turn this dress into something we would wear today. We’re going to pair our Life Changer Moto Jacket from BlankNYC and a pair of “Tortilla Suede” Derika Leather Boots from Vince Camuto. Our slip dress has an overlay of black lace on the hem and bust-line so a pair of nude boots pair well with the nude/black pattern. Voila! You have the perfect “out and about” look.
Next we’re going to take a nod of inspiration from our French fashion muse, Carine Roitfeld. Carine is the queen of heels, pencil skirts and bedhead hair and we’re going to draw on some of that with our nude slip dress. We’re taking a black pencil skirt we already own that has a high slit on the side. Ours is from Seven and we’re actually going to layer it over our slip dress so that the satin nude and lace detailing peek out from the slit in our pencil skirt. Layering our dress with this skirt is a fun and creative way to repurpose our slip and to accentuate the lace detailing. It's fun, it's sexy and add a pair of black pumps and your favorite clutch and you have the perfect day-to-night look.
For our last repurposed look, it's very simple and you probably already own any and all accessories suggested. We’re taking our vintage Gucci double-G hardware belt and adding it to the waist of our dress. By doing this we’re adding some shape and dimension to our garment. Long are the days where we would wear shapeless slip dresses with oversized jean jackets. No, no, today we want to celebrate our shape and femininity and show it off to the world. Adding a statement belt only complements the black lace detailing and gives our dress a modern twist. We like to wear this look with some low-heel square toe mules and call it a day.
Three looks, one dress. Who knew thrifting in our own closets is a lot more fun than we thought and we can’t wait to sift even further and discover what other treasures our wardrobes behold. Until then, take it from us, you don’t need any more online purchases when your very own closet already has so many gems that need rediscovering. So close the open tabs, exit out of your email and shut the laptop and open up your closet and get to “shopping!”
