Gender Neutral Fashion
The amazing thing about fashion is that it’s often a direct reflection of the times we live in. We can actually even look back through the years and if you pay close enough attention, learn a lot about the world at any given decade based on what people were wearing. This day and age is no different, so what is fashion speaking to today? Gender identity has come a long way since the last century, actually its come a long way since even ten years ago and thankfully fashion is catching up as well. Gender neutral clothing has become a significant part of the industry and only continues to rise.
One way that the industry is doing its part is by making much more unisex clothing, meaning clothing that can be worn by men as well as women and there’s no change in form or construct to fit either gender. Unisex clothing usually puts comfort and versatility at the core of its design as opposed to detail so it’s usually fairly minimalistic. Another gender neutral trend is gender-fluid clothing. Gender fluid dressing tends to blur the lines between what is considered masculine or feminine and could look like women wearing tailored clothing that appears more masculine or men wearing skirts, dresses, etc.
Since these styles are gaining more popularity and acknowledgement and are seen as societal statements about non-conformity they are often also sustainable and eco-friendly. We have Gen Z and the Millennial generations to thank for that. By creating more gender neutral clothing, more feel included in the fashion conversation and with the significant shift in views about gender and sexuality there is also a big shift in how we approach dressing and styling. Hopefully as this movement grows, more designers and brands will follow suit to promote mutual inclusivity for everyone.
