Why You Must Visit Hungary
Don't get us wrong. If you go to Hungary, you must go to its capital city. And if in the capital city of Budapest, you can't travel all that way without visiting its greatest hits. You know - Buda Castle, Parliament Building, Fisherman's Bastion ... St. Stephen's Basilica. Maybe even a cruise on the Dunabe River and at least one of the legendary thermal spas.

But hidden treasures are rarely found in travel guides. And the magic is in the discovery: the more adventurous the hunt, the more beautiful the find. So if you find yourself near Budapest, we say rent a car, get your fill of this most opulent capital city, and then go on a little adventure beyond the city walls, where you will be pleasantly surprised. This is exactly what we did on our last visit, with zero regrets other than that of too little time. And as the city skyline shrunk in our rearview, we felt the air get a little fresher. In about 30 minutes, we happened upon the quaintest little town of Szentendre, complete with cobbled streets, winding pathways and floating lanterns across its courtyards.

There is a very particular vibe and way about this intriguing town of Szentendre. It's hospitable, unbothered, genuine, warm. There were little ice cream shops on the corners, where kids from nearby schools all flocked. We seemed to have come just in time for an outdoor film showing in Fő Tér -- the main square -- where residents nestled on pillows and blankets for a town movie. From the museums and art galleries, to the multi-colored bungalows that lined the pathways -- it was all just whimsical. Then a few steps beyond the main square, the town caught up with the Danube River -- the only thing that seemed to connect this quaint cultural capsule to the neighboring capital.

I have to tell you - we live for this hunt. We appreciate the usual suspects and greatest hits. But there is something magical about these elusive treasures waiting to be discovered. And the only way to experience this magic is to dare to adventure.
