Being the conscious consumers that we are, sustainability has become a key indicator in the brands that we shop and support. From design to production to final sale, there are many ways that designers can incorporate more sustainable practices when manufacturing their products. Where do we find these brands? How can you support these brands yourselves? We decided to round up a few designers who make a conscious effort in their design and manufacturing processes. Even better? You can shop these brands all in one spot at Nordstrom online.
You’ve probably heard of the brand Reformation dozens of times. Launched in 2009 their mission was to prove that, “sustainability and fashion could coexist.” We’d say that they have successfully proved that over the last twelve years by investing in sustainable shipping materials, and using eco-friendly fabrics in the production of their clothing and accessories. According to Good On You, a website that rates brand’s commitment to sustainability, Reformation ranks a 5 out of 5 when rated on their public commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the planet.
Reformation uses eco-friendly materials as well as recycled materials and they reuse all of their offcuts to cut down on their textile waste and they also use renewable energy to reduce their climate impact. We can’t think of a better reason to shop Reformation, can you?
Adidas by Stella McCartney
We already know about Stella McCartney and her fabulous efforts to have a sustainable brand. Did you know that she was the first big name brand designer to have a sustainable direction and outlook for her brand? McCartney sets a high standard when it comes to creating ethical fashion which isn’t an easy feat especially in today’s climate (pun intended). By using materials such as spider silk, mushroom leather and recycling plastic found in the ocean, it’s safe to say that Stella McCartney has long been a pioneer in creating luxury collections that have a positive impact on our environment.
So you can imagine how excited we were when we discovered a collab between athletic outfitters Adidas and McCartney. According to Good On You the Adidas collaboration ranks a 4 out of 5 when it comes to their use of eco-friendly materials and animal welfare policies. No surprise since Stella McCartney has created a “skin-free-skin” and “fur-free-fur” that are completely synthetic and animal-free. In this collection you will find elevated athleisure items such as sports bras, leggings, sweatsuit sets and chic gym bags.
“We’re like earth’s number one fan,” says the eco-friendly brand known as Girlfriend Collective. The brand’s focus is to create sustainable athleisure wear including biker shorts, leggings and their infamous sports bra that is supposed to be light as air. Girlfriend Collective doesn’t rely on the flair and flashiness but rather they let their products speak for themselves. What does our reliable Good On You rubric have to say about the brand? Perhaps the highest rated brand on this list, Girlfriend Collective ranks “great” and a 5 out of 5 as an activewear brand that creates timeless pieces from recycled materials.
Collective reuses its off-cut materials to minimize textile waste, its wastewater is disposed of in an eco-friendly way and they take conscious steps to make sure their climate impact is extremely limited. We may be new to this whole sustainability thing but we’re learning fast. It doesn’t hurt of course to have amazing brands like Reformation, Adidas by Stella McCartney and Girlfriend Collective there to guide us along the way.
