This Or That?

In today’s battle against the tragedy that is fast fashion, we’ve become what we like to call conscious consumers. What does that look like? Well, instead of choosing shoes, clothing and accessories that follow trends, we’re selectively and consciously picking pieces that are classic, functional and can be styled with many if not all of our other garments we already own. It also looks like investing in luxury pieces and shopping vintage as well as sustainable items as well. In our quest to be the best conscious consumers we can be there are some pieces we’ve come to learn are better to choose than others, so let’s play a little game of what we like to call, “this or that.”

When it comes to boots it's easy to fall into the trend trap perhaps more so than any other category of garment. Trends like the moto boot and ballet flats are really hot right now and we’ve already admitted we’re fans of both looks but we know that by next fashion season, they’re going to both probably be on the outs. Instead of choosing the trendy moto boot we would opt for a classic knee high leather boot that could be pointed, round or square toe with a 3-4 inch heel. Choosing this boot in a classic color such as black, brown or even a deep burgundy red is going to be able to be styled with multiple pieces in your closet and will be in style any season. A good alternative to the ballet flat would be to invest in classic leather loafers. Just like the classic black boot, this shoe won’t go out of style. You can customize your loafers by choosing a penny loafer, a chunky chain loafer or even a platform sole loafer. They’re comfortable, classic and easy to style day to night as well.

Faux fur and faux sherpa coats always become popular around this time of year but frankly most of these options are not sustainable, look cheap and therefore only last one season or two which makes them not so sustainable. This winter we’re opting for leather moto jackets, leather blazers or even leather floor length coats. Leather is very insulating, easily elevates any look (even our sweatpants), and there are so many vintage leather coats which makes it easy to find your perfect fit and shop multiple styles. When it comes to accessories, it's easy to fall into the trap that influencers set so well, which is buying cheap costume jewelry that is only worn for one event or party and is most likely going to break by the time you make it home. We suggest investing in high quality pieces in silver or gold that are water resistant, hypoallergenic and made from sustainable pieces. Choosing multiple thin necklaces and bracelets that you can layer to dress up or dress down an outfit is also a must as well. When it comes to shopping for statement necklaces, hitting up vintage jewelry stores is a great way to find uniquely stunning pieces and it’s great for the environment as well. Following these easy “this or that,” guide is a guaranteed way to stay stylish beyond the trend and looking chic no matter the fashion season.
