The Good Comes With The Bad…
Every decade has their peaks as well as their lows. We look back on every decade or even every year or generation and we reflect on the good and the bad that happened. This is especially true when we’re talking about fashion. We can look back at our parents' old photographs and think, what the hell was my mother thinking wearing those shoes or what was my father doing with that perm? Well, you get the picture - literally. We even look back at our own images from middle school or even from a couple years ago and ask ourselves if we plead temporary insanity because of a trend we tried to pull off at the time. Nope, no excuses, just bad decisions on our part, but that's how we grow right? We’re just trying something “new” out at the time, trying it on for size and turns out we didn’t like it and that’s totally okay. Let’s journey back, not too far, but just a few years and we want to share with you some of the worst and some of the best trends we embraced and tried to avoid.
The Worst…
Thankfully one trend we never tried, the wedge sneaker had a hold on actresses, models and regular women in the 2010s. Who’s idea was it to make a shoe that is supposed to be comfortable or even athletic and add a wedge heel to it? We’re so happy this trend was laid to rest even though power players like Paris Hilton and Heidi Klum were big champions of the trend. Every brand from Nike to Puma jumped on the hype before it died out. Thank the universe!
This trend is still alive and well but really took root in the 2010s. The big component? The flower crown which was really made popular by the 70s but was reintroduced and made popular again by Coachella attendees. You can thank the avid Lana del Rey fans for this resurgence of the trend. This also brought back to life Aztec printed leggings, bell bottoms and floral off-the-shoulder crop tops. We have to admit we never did the whole flower crown thing, but we were a victim of the Aztec leggings. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.
Personalization
There was a time where customizing your gear was at an all time high. From bedazzling your velour sweatsuit to brands like Nike having in-store personalization options. We have one question: why? Why do I need to direct my attention to your pants and see your name? There is no good reason. Are you George Clooney? No? I don’t need to know your name, your favorite sports team or your Instagram handle. Just a few things you could spot on any given person’s customized gear. Next please!
The best…
You might’ve thought we would have leggings on “the worst” list but you can think again. We’re not saying leggings should be worn anywhere and everywhere but you can’t deny they are damn comfortable as well as convenient. Throw a pair on with some sneakers and a decent hoodie and you have a great athleisure look! Our favorite pair of the moment are these Spanx Faux Leather Leggings. They prove that you can have fun with texture and style and that not all leggings are the same.
From leggings to athleisure, appropriate. We have the Millennials to thank for this trend that we can never abandon. Taking your traditional workout gear and turning it into streetwear was a giant win for the 2010s and every luxury brand jumped on the bandwagon to create sweatpants, t-shirts and sweatshirts just to follow the trend and they still are! We saw for the first time sweatpants come down the runway and of course we can’t forget about the Gucci slide sandals or the biker shorts comeback. We’re hoping this trend doesn’t disappear anytime soon so for the time being here are our picks for our favorite athleisure items:
1. Zella High Waisted Biker Short / 2. Adidas Adilette Slide Sandal / 3. Nike Essential Fleece Pant.
We’ve all seen the micro mini handbags and glasses to match. Made popular by brands such as Jacquemus, this trend is still going the distance and we’re happy about that. It’s definitely a trend that’s less about function and more about aesthetic but that’s fashion for ya. We went from larger than life shades and bags in the early 2000s and now embraced the “Matrix” style of accessories since the 2010s and everyone from Bella Hadid to Rihanna embraces the trend to this day. We love these Rad+ Mini Rectangle Sunglasses which barely cover our eyeballs, but we can’t resist - they’re too cute! And to match our teeny glasses we have this teeny tiny Mini Cassette Leather Crossbody from Bottega Veneta. The 2010s taught us a lot about what we like and what we don’t. Each wave of fashion has its ups and its downs but we love to have fun while we’re riding it. What’s your favorite from this list?
Sincerely,
Kailyn Chadwick
