Love The Skin You're In
When this time of year rolls around, we tend to become even more aware of our skin’s issues. The weather tends to be more bitter and dry, therefore accentuating pesky skin problems like dryness, acne and texture. In regards to that last issue, texture can be the hardest to target and can show up in various ways such as enlarged pores, acne scars or roughness and unevenness.
The first tip is exfoliation. Dead skin cells accumulate on the surface and as a result you might see clogged pores and a dull complexion but if you incorporate a gentle exfoliation routine into your weekly regiment, this can drastically improve the quality and appearance of your skin.
The key is to exfoliate (gently) once or twice a week and then gradually more if your skin adjusts and tolerates it. You want to look for exfoliating products that have ingredients such as “AHAs” or “BHAs” which are two types of hydroxy acids that help eliminate and dissolve dead skin cells. After you exfoliate and moisturize, always remember to apply SPF if you’re going outside to protect from harmful UV rays.
Our next tip should be pretty obvious but in case it's not, here ya go. Hydration. When our skin is hydrated, it will naturally appear plumper, firmer and therefore smoother. Going in with a high quality moisturizer or hyaluronic serum are just a few sure fire ways to ensure hydration. Did you know that hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000x its weight in water? Talk about water weight we want to actually keep. In addition to ultra hydrating products, you might also want to consider investing in a humidifier to combat dry indoor air during these brutal winter months, you know, just for good measure.
Our third tip? Perhaps the most difficult but surely doable and that’s to maintain consistency. You have to be patient with your routine and not give up before you see results because that would be a waste of time, money and effort. It can take as long as a month or two for your good efforts to bear fruit but don’t lose hope. If all else fails we recommend speaking to your dermatologist about other techniques such as microneedling or chemical peels but until then embrace the journey and love the skin you're in.
