Our Newest Beauty Obsession

The Closet Correspondent vows to do what? Provide the best styling tips, report on the latest trends and share all of the best kept fashion and beauty secrets. It’s pretty rare these days that we discover something so revolutionary and timeless because, as fashion goes, trends are fleeting and leave just as fast as they showed up. However, what we’re going to discuss today, we believe you’ll be using for the rest of your days. We know we will.

It seems like everyone has been talking about the new skincare tool/technique called gua sha. Celebrities like Gweneth Paltrow, Kendall Jenner and even Justin Bieber are among the many who rave about this skincare treatment. Whereas this treatment seems to be new, it's actually been around for centuries originating in the Paleolithic age when using stone tools to promote energy flow throughout your body. This ancient traditional Chinese Medicine is now Hollywood’s newest obsession for an instant facelift.

It seems gua sha gained newfound popularity during Covid-19, when many people had to abandon their monthly facial appointment and had to find an alternative they could perform at home. Enter the gua sha, often a marble or stainless steel tool that has contoured crevices and curves to use on the different parts of your face: forehead, neck, cheeks, nose, chin, lips and brows. This small miracle, all-in-one tool that provides results in just one use has everyone, us included, addicted.

How does it work?

First, it's important to know how the gua sha works. By dragging the tool over the various parts of your face you are increasing circulation, decreasing puffiness and promoting collagen. By doing so you are reducing the appearance of wrinkles and contouring your face for an overall lifting of the face. To use this tool, it's actually quite simple and can be done as many times a week as you want both in the morning and at night. All you have to do is to make sure your skin is cleansed and after you apply your serum, moisturizer or facial oil, you take the gua sha and in upward and outward strokes drag the tool over your cheeks, jawline, forehead, above the eyes and neck. Be careful not to apply too much pressure because this could lead to broken capillaries, and we don’t want that.

One of our favorite starter kits for gua sha is the Osea Gua Sha Ritual Skin Care Set. This kit comes with a jade gua sha, Sea Minerals Mist and Undaria Argan Oil. It has everything you need to get started using this miracle skin treatment. We also like this Rose Quartz Buffy Gua Sha from Skin Gym. Using a rose quartz or jade gua sha as opposed to a stainless steel one, is supposed to be even more beneficial because of the crystal healing properties. However, the stainless steel gua sha isn’t porous so therefore it doesn’t collect bacteria. Both are very beneficial and it just depends on your preference. This Skin Gym Gua Sha has a contour for every section of your face to ensure your complexion is left glowing and lifted.

So what do you think? Are you sold on the many benefits of gua sha? We’ve been using gua sha now for a few months and we can’t seem to go a day without using it. We’ve noticed more definition in our cheeks, under our neck and significant reduction in our forehead wrinkles. Give it a try and let us know what you think. Until next time.

Sincerely,

Kailyn Chadwick, your Closet Correspondent.
