My Mother Always Said……. Be Yourself
“Express yourself.”“Be yourself.”“There is only one you.”Besides seeing these expressions on statement pillows from your local Home Goods or Nordstrom, it feels like everyone around us is promoting self-love and the freedom to, well, be yourself. By no means is this a bad thing but it can seem jaded and the intention loses meaning when this philosophy is everywhere including throw pillows and cringy logo tees. So how does one do it? How can we be authentic to our true selves in spite of the trend? We don’t want to say it, we want to show it. To live it. What’s a more perfect way to express ourselves than through what we wear, our style and our fashion.
It's more than garments and brand names, although that can be a part of it. The way we dress, the way we can present ourselves can tell the world a lot about ourselves without even opening our mouths. Think about it, have you ever been intimidated solely based on someone's looks? Maybe you’ve even been put at ease and comforted or inspired by how someone is dressed. In a way, everyone is wearing their own uniform, meaning just how we identify a doctor or a janitor, others are making assignments and assumptions about us because of our clothing. So, how to accomplish expressing ourselves via our style? We have a few suggestions just for you.
"What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language."
— Miuccia Prada
Following your instinct is essential when finding and expressing your individuality, because who knows you better than you? If you’re a bold woman maybe you gravitate towards color or if you’re into glam then perhaps it's a bold lip and some platform boots.
Either way, don’t look to Instagram to tell you what you should wear. Looking online or on social media and you’ll only find what's been done before when you are the only one that can express yourself the way you want. In lieu of that, our self-expression is changing every day and we’re multi-faceted people after all aren’t we? We’re unexpected and unpredictable and that’s the fun element that comes with fashion. There are infinite garments out there to match our infinite moods, styles and preferences.
"Style is something each of us already has, all we need to do is find it."
—Diane von Furstenberg
At this point you may be thinking that this article doesn’t warrant any specific guidelines that tell you exactly how to express yourself through your personal style. That’s actually the whole point, it's not about the how but about the what. And the what is something you already have and that’s confidence. And that trial and error part? Easy. Easy once you have the determination, assurance and the daringness to try new things and accept what makes you feel good. This journey will last your entire life so if you feel a sense of urgency to figure it out by the end of the month or the end of the year, we’re sorry to tell you that’s probably not going to happen. So, take a breath, tap into your creative side and prepare for a lifetime of opportunities to get it just right.
