Master Parisian Chic
There’s a reason Paris has long been the fashion capital of the world. When we think of Parisian style what comes to mind? Is it berets and striped shirts? Is it trench coats and scarves? Or is it Chanel No.5 and ballet flats? You could say that all of the above are correct but what’s the real secret behind that iconic French style? We’re here to break down how to achieve that Parisian chicness with ease and effortlessness.
The thing about Parisian women is just that: their style is effortless. Here in the states we’re so used to trying so hard to keep up with trends but women in Paris, they create the trends. Or rather, they don’t follow trends at all, instead they stick to the basics. It’s all about the classics and the style staples and comfort and style go hand-in-hand. So, what are the winter basics for French women?
Earlier when we mentioned striped sweaters and berets, well we weren’t completely wrong. There’s a reason striped shirts and sweaters are cliche in Paris,it's because women are actually wearing them on the street. For your classic Parisian winter fit, a neat pullover sweater is your base. Think this Nautica Women’s Year Round Long Sleeve. It’s a simple pullover, crew neck sweater with thin white stripes that’s right in line with Parisian style. We also like this Lillusory Women’s Oversized Turtleneck. It has a dramatic, high neck style, long batwing sleeve and two slits on the side. It’s perfect for winter and great for layering under coats.
Coats. When it comes to coats, as a Parisian, you only really need one or two coats for winter. It doesn’t call for a lot of fuss or a lot of frill, but it’s good to have one in black and another in another neutral color. This way, you’re guaranteed to have a coat that can go with any outfit. We really like this camel colored belted coat from Daily Ritual. The belt cinches the waist and adds a touch of femininity and shape. The color is a rich beige that will match with most, if not everything in your closet. We’re choosing this Luiyenes Faux Wool Coat for our noir option. The length is almost to the floor and we really like the drama that adds. The length is nice because even on your most casual days, it can really elevate your outfit compared to a shorter coat.
For winter, boots are a must. You really can’t go wrong here. A kneehigh leather slouch boot or flat riding boot are great for style and walking those cobblestone pathways. However, Parisian women are really partial to their loafers and flats. These Franco Sarto Carolynn Loafer Flats have a rubber sole, patent leather finish and tassel detail on the toe. We also like these Yetier Women’s Leather Slip-Ons because there’s a slightly higher platform and the chain detailing feels a bit more modern. Remember when it comes to Parisian style, think simple and then think a bit more simple. Then you’re right in the sweet spot.
Finally, scarves are definitely an essential when it comes to mastering Parisian chic. A scarf is the icing on the cake and literally tops off and completes any French winter outfit. For warmth we like this Calvin Klein Pashmina Scarf. It’s warm, so it’s functional and it comes in a wide variety of colors so it’s good to think about purchasing multiple colors to change up and add to your basics. For a night out option try this other scarf from Calvin Klein, the Women’s Lightweight Wrap Scarf. It’s a lighter silk/satin blend and a bit fancier for an easy transition from casual to classy in seconds.
Mastering French fashion is easier than you think. Actually, it’s just as easy as it looks. A simple assortment of pullover sweaters, two good coats, easy loafers and an assortment of socks is the formula. Stick to it and you can’t go wrong. Remember, think simple, then a step further and you’re in the sweet spot.
