How to Navigate the Monochromatic Trend
It is time to dial it down and take a break from the fuss of patterns such as stripes, polkadots, and florals. Let’s get away from the color blocking and exercise our right to remain rational but fashionable. Does the word monochromatic bring images of effortlessly dressed models or exuberantly color coordinated casualness? Or, like us, are you sighing with relief that finally a trend that makes getting ready for the day so, so, so, so, so much easier? Answer yes to all the above? Well then you’re on the right track because we want to highlight another trend we wouldn’t mind keeping around for, well, forever and that is the monochromatic look.
The words mono and chromatic have their own separate meanings, mono means “single” and chromatic means “color.” It sounds restricting when we break it down like this but actually dressing in a single color has its freedoms that you might be surprised about. For example, let’s say that your chosen color is pink, maybe you’re thinking you need the same shade of pink for your skirt, jacket, shirt, and shoes. You are wrong! Sorry, but you are so wrong and that’s okay because we’re here to teach you. The beauty here is that you can switch up your monochromatic look with different shades of your chosen color, so for this example you can have a baby pink pastel satin skirt, a cotton mauve shirt, a blush color jacket and a pair of hot pink square-toe mules to put a big exclamation point on your monochromatic look.
“Style is something each of us already has, all we need is to find it."
—Diane von Furstenberg
Another beauty to this trend is that you can elevate your outfit by playing with textures. As per our example above, we have different shades of pink but we also play with textures. Our skirt is a satin shift skirt that glimmers in the sun but our jacket is a heavy wool statement piece that adds length and drama. The use of texture and color when it comes to a monochromatic look allows us to have fun and to keep this style interesting. We have been seeing this trend making major moves since 2018. What we love about this trend is that it can be luxurious, casual, sexy, cool, warm and the list goes on and on but what’s special about this is that you can tailor it to fit your own personal style agenda. Don’t be afraid to play with different shades along the spectrum of your favorite color and to even add accessories in colors that defy and challenge your one chosen color palette.
