How To Find Your Fashion Inspiration
In our “new normal” era that is saturated with social media posts reporting the newest and hottest trends every second you would think that it would be easy to find our own individual style. However, we think the opposite can occur when you’re overwhelmed by what everyone else is wearing instead of channeling what you want to wear and what you actually like when it comes to fashion. So, what do you do when you find yourself searching for your own individual style but can’t seem to activate that inspiration?
Luckily, we have some experience when it comes to this issue. Speaking for ourselves, we have experienced the style inspiration drought quite a few times. We find this often happens when the seasons change or when we’re entering a new era in our lives and we’re seeking to reinvent ourselves and our look. You might experience a style renaissance when you find a new job, a new love or heck, maybe even when you find a new Netflix binge and you feel inspired, (we’ve been there). So, how to find your fashion inspiration in an era that is overly inspired?
One of our favorite things to do in life is to people watch. For the sake of this conversation, let’s change that to “style watch.” Because that’s actually what we’re doing. We simply open our eyes to more than what’s being served at the café or restaurant or what’s on our phones and observe. You would be surprised at what style inspiration can present itself when you take it to the streets and see what others are wearing. You might be inspired by how someone wears their coat draping from their shoulders or your interest may be aroused by a pair of sneakers you’ve never seen before. One thing leads to another, and you’ve got an entire list in your “notes” app with new style inspiration.
If inspiration is what you’re seeking, then we’re telling you to go against reason and put the phone down. Yes, exit out of Instagram and stop scrolling TikTok and let’s get old- school. Buy a freakin’ magazine. Yes. Head to your local bookstore or magazine shop, (yes, they still have those), and pick up an old-fashioned paper publication. You’re probably thinking to yourself, Style Sonata, I can just search for Vogue on my iPhone, and you could but here’s what you’re missing; all of the great ads and filler stories that they don’t put on the website! We suggest subscribing to some of your favorite fashion magazines and each month you can have infinite inspiration delivered right to your door. Also, head over to your mom’s house, your aunt’s house or even your grandmother’s house and scrolling through their old magazines, you might be surprised at what inspirations strikes from previous generations.
Our last bit of advice for when it comes to seeking style inspiration, is to look at yourself. What are your likes and dislikes? What’s your favorite heroin from your favorite book nd how does she dress? What’s your favorite movie and what is the wardrobe like? Who is.your celebrity girl crush and how does she dress? We would even suggest revisiting old photos of yourself as a teen, or even a child and how did you dress/how were they dressing at the time? Fashion is cyclical and you can find inspiration from the past and reinvent it in a new, unique way today. Style inspiration is all around us, you just have to
know where to look. Let us know what inspires your style and you just might be helping someone else on their own style journey. Until next time!
