Pirouette Yourself Outta Here!
We got that itch, one that can only be satisfied by escaping our day-to-day life and hopping on a flight to a far away place. The only question that matters is where to? These last few weeks our timelines have been bombarded with fashion flicks from the Cannes Film Festival. Celebrities like Regina King, Sharon Stone and Bella Hadid graced our timelines from the most stylish red carpet event around and we had to get to planning our romantic, sexy getaway to the French Riviera and do Cannes in our own way which is nothing but fabulous. We want to share with you some key moments of our impromptu vacay.
The great thing about planning a trip to the French Riviera is that it’s very easy to hop from town to town because these villages are all so close together. Another plus is that the weather is very pleasant practically all year round providing mild weather conditions that are perfect for hitting the infamous beaches and sunbathing and playing in the waves. This brings us to our first activity we couldn’t wait to do, which was finding a beach to lay out at for the better part of the day. Many of the beaches in Cannes specifically are privately owned by hotels so we scouted out a public beach since we were staying in an AirBnB and not a resort. After some research we headed to Plage Zemenhof which is a public beach, however we did pay a small fee to rent some chairs and umbrellas for the day. This beach is perfect for swimming because the sea is so shallow and the golden sand was the perfect backdrop for all of our selfies.
There’s much to do and see in Cannes besides the film festival every May. There is rich architecture and history to this town in the French Riviera. For example, did you know Picasso found this town so beautiful he lived there for a period of time to paint and work? We spent the day visiting Le Suquet which is basically the old town district of Cannes. We saw the Eglise de Suquet which is an historical church located in the center of the district square and paused for some amazing photos. We then went to visit the “old port” of Cannes and enjoyed a French bistro meal while throwing bread pieces to the ducks taking refuge in the harbor. While in the old town part of Cannes, we indulged in some shopping at some of the boutiques on Rue d’Antibes which is a more commercial area for shopping. If you’re looking for more niche boutiques to spend some euros, we would suggest Rue Meynadier which is a quaint pedestrian only street with some great niche boutiques.
We’ve sunbathed, indulged in some culture, shopped so now what? We decided to get outta town and pop over to Nice which is a short 20-40 minute car ride depending on the traffic of course. Nice is another gorgeous popular tourist town in the French Riviera known for its beaches and amazing cuisine. There are so many amazing fine dining experiences in Nice such as Jan which only seats 24 people and has a South African twist on traditional French cuisine. Then there’s La Merenda which has an always changing chalkboard menu and transports you to another time and era of French cuisine. Le Canon which is where we ended up dining is a French bistro style restaurant known for their extensive list of natural wines. Empty wine bottles end up being displayed on the restaurant’s walls which makes for some great Insa-snaps.
