Bohemian Chic And Folklore Fashion
Retro patterns, velvet textures and far out fabrics are what comes to mind when we think of bohemian style. Bohemian style hails from the 70s but has been recurrent in 2000s fashion. Definitely erring on the maximalist side of fashion, this look, when executed correctly, comes off as effortless. The bohemian and folklore woman is easy-going, and appears to not care about whether or not her shoes match her purse but is there more to mastering this look? Style Sonata investigated and we found some key items that contribute to this bohemian way of dressing.
When we think of bohemian style we think of rich colors and texture. The first thing that comes to mind is suedes and velvet. There are many ways to incorporate this into your boho look whether it be a pair of boots, a jacket or even a head-to-toe suede look. The choice is yours but we would start with these Sam Edelman Women’s Ivette Boots. Available in a rich, ivory or “Sesame” color as well as black, these suede boots are a modern day nod to bohemian style. For one they’re suede, but their wooden block heel adds that extra warmth that we love about folklore-like fashion.
This BGSD Anna Suede Leather Car Coat is another great example of boho-chic. The relaxed fit is casual and the rich, dark brown shade is just in line with the trend. We like this jacket because it is also available in petite sizes and is available in four different neutral shades. We also like this BCBGMaxazria Relaxed Long Sleeve Faux Suede Jacket. We like its short crop because it’s more feminine and has a more sleek fit to it. We also like how the buttons are also suede and are almost invisible and blend in with the jacket. Its silhouette is great for layering with a pair of jeans and suede boots.
You can’t really talk about bohemian style without mentioning dresses. More specifically, the maxi dress. The maxi dress is free, non-restrictive and most importantly it’s comfy as hell. Who does boho chic better than Free People? This Free People Golden Hour Maxi Dress has a billowing, v-neck silhouette and a celestial navy and golden orange print. Its cinching at the waist is flattering for any figure and its exaggerated sleeves and floor-length checks every box on our bohemian maxi dress list.
We also like this BCBGMaxazria Women’s Off the Shoulder Maxi Dress. Aligning more with our “cottage-core” obsession, this ruffled, maxi dress is a great option for showing off your bohemian necklace collection as it will take center stage on this off the shoulder dress. Layer your favorite wool coat or long cardigan and let your hair hang long, wild and free and lean into your bohemian obsession with this boho-chic dream dress.
How is it that bohemian style can get away with combining crazy prints and colors and somehow it works every time? The chaos creates harmony somehow and is an essential component to dressing like a boho hippy. This Umgee Ruffled Long Body Kimono is a great example of this chaos. This floor length kimono can be worn as cover-up on the beach or layered over dresses, jeans or leggings for everyday wear. It’s floral print combined with sculptural shapes make it an appropriate testament to that classic hippie style.
Do you think that bohemian style is here to stay? Or do you think it should stay in Greenwich Village circa 1974? We can’t lie, we love the relaxed notion of this style and the boldness in the contrasting colors and prints that all somehow work well together. Bohemian style and folklore fashion go hand in hand and we’re looking forward to incorporating these pieces into our winter wardrobe.
