All That Glitters

Who doesn’t love a good metallic top every now and again? Sequins, sparkles, golds and all things shiny seem to be only appropriate for the evening...or are they? It’s a longstanding fashion faux pas to wear items that gleam and glitter during the day. The question is this: do we ditch this silly but long respected fashion rule or do we throw caution to the wind and let those glittering glamorous sheens shine at any time of day?

So. Lots of speculation on this topic seems to be popping up across fashion mediums all over the internet and we can’t seem to escape it. Do metallics such as golds and silvers and sequins have a place during the day time?

We are going to try and be objective on this topic since I own literally zero items of clothing that “glitter” or “gleam.” The way we feel about this is not so much the issue of sequins and metallics themselves but the how. How you style a trend or a pattern or texture all depends on the how.

That element of “how” is a big factor. Also, sequins and shiny materials like sequins can be tricky to style during the day. We would say this is something to style in moderation. We don’t want to be walking down Fillmore St. and be blinded by a sequin top, pants and scarf, you know?

Some textures are good in excess. Denim on denim can be very successful and so can leather on leather. But we find that those materials are more underwhelming, shall we say, as opposed to sequins and metallics.

Sequin dress: suitable for evening, not for daytime. However, we do love this Glitter Sweet Jacket by BB Dakota by Steve Madden. It’s very shiny and sparkly but paired with a vintage band tee and classic denim and we think it’s suitable.

We love a good pun. Also in tune with the moderation factor are these sequin face masks that we would even consider wearing.

We think that generally most of these “fashion rules” are out of date. At the end of the day, there are no rules when it comes to style. You should wear what makes you feel good, what makes you happy and confident. If that involves sequins and shimmer, by all means go for it. I think there aren’t so much as “rules” but maybe limitations?

We’ve seen a lot more bizarre things being worn on the cover of Vogue or W than sequins, so we think it’s a green light for us for sequins. So go forth and shine on!
