Pretty in Pink

by Bunny Fayne |

This season has been all about looks with an undeniable nod to feminine styles, so it isn’t surprising that pink is in. We have long associated the color with everything ultra-girlie, Barbie and Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods being the ultimate representatives of pink as not just a color, but as a lifestyle. In 19th century England, pink ribbons or decorations were often worn by young boys; boys were simply considered small men, and while men in England wore red uniforms, boys wore pink. Girls on the other hand at that time, wore blue and white. Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli was responsible for putting pink on the fashion radar for women in 1931 when she mixed up magenta with white to create what she dubbed “Shocking Pink,” and it has remained the Number One color associated with all things feminine ever since. Pantone, the company that has the last word on color, has declared Pink Quartz one of the colors of the year. While it’s a rather subdued shade, designers have created clothing and accessories in every kind of pink imaginable including, Bubble Gum, Fuchsia, Blush and Mauve. One of the most popular color combinations trending now is pale pink with bright yellow. If you’re feeling adventurous, try pairing a powder pink blouse with a canary yellow, pencil skirt for a result that is fresh and unexpected. Since pink is the designer color du jour for everything from jeans, to leather jackets, to textured dresses, to bags and even sunglasses, you’re sure to find something that will tickle your fancy. After-all, who doesn’t want to be in the pink? “Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink.” Lily Pulitzer
