Making it Up
It’s partytime and while the living may be easy, wearing makeup can be a real challenge due to the complications that heat introduce to the equation. We have all experienced December days where as temperature tops out, our makeup reaches an unfortunate melting point that can make us feel like we are slip sliding away. If you’re anything like us, the idea of going out totally sans makeup for any reason is one of those, “Thanks, but no thanks,” propositions. The very idea of heading to a special event, out on a date, or to that important work meeting bare-faced, is less than appealing.NORDSTROM: Lip Color / Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks
Tailoring your beauty routine to cope with heat, humidity and dry air is the only way to surefire way to “save face,” without full-on baring it. While primers are helpful in getting your makeup to stay put during the cooler months, overuse of it can make your skin look dull or unnaturally flat and matte. Silicon primers come with the double whammy of potentially drying out your skin. Since winter’s elements already dry out your skin, you don’t want to add to the problem.
Using a foundation with a built-in serum is a perfect way to provide your skin with the moisture and hydration that will act like a magnet to keep your coverage in place. Looking fresh and dewy, as opposed to slick and sloppy is certainly a better option. Choosing a liquid foundation over a cream, especially one with a built-in SPF factor of at least 40 is your best bet for beating the humidity and protecting your skin from sun damage. The no creams philosophy is different however, when it comes to choosing a blush. Powder blushes just wind up looking dull and streaky in hot weather. The best cream blushes are those that are multi-use, in that they can be used on your cheeks as well as your lips. Paring down the contents of your cosmetic bag is a great way to travel light and get more bang for your buck out of your makeup.
Winter and metallic eye shadow goes together like Pina’s and Coladas, regardless of what color your eyes are. Warm bronze and gold shades look fabulous in that they echo things like sparkling sand beaches and sensational sunsets. Your best bet for lipstick is one that is creamy, yet semi-matte. You want the moisture that a cream formulation provides to dry lips, as well as the matte quality that will keep your lipstick from bleeding all over the place.
