Charge of the Light Suede Brigade

Though the words ‘warm weather suede’ sound a bit like an oxy-moron, spring 2016 is all about ‘70s inspired suede. Despite its retro inspired roots and look, the feel of the new suede is unlike anything you have experienced before. This suede not heavy or stiff, and the silk linings that were once commonplace accompaniments, are gone. Canny designers have sought out tanneries that are capable of creating thin and supple leather with that undeniable peach-like feel that is suede. This makes this trend easy to slip into as an alternative to expected spring materials and fabrics. Since our seasons have become so muddled, it’s wonderful to have a go-to fabric that can bridge cold and warm seasons and carry on even as the temperatures climb. Look for colorful patchwork dresses, flared silhouettes, fringe embellishments, and waists cinched with oversize, geometric belts. Rebecca Minkoff, Coach, and Jonathan Saunders have all used suede on seasonal silhouettes like shorts, miniskirts, and plunging dresses. Derek Lam, Tory Burch, Isabel Marant, Balmain, Prada, Theory and Alberta Ferretti have also jumped on the suede train for spring. With all these fabulous choices, there is no better time to embrace the new suede.
