Winter Skincare Guide
We all know that our skin changes from season to season. We need to adjust our skincare habits and routines to match the seasons. Winter can be especially tricky with cold weather leaving our skin dry and itchy but luckily we’re here to give you our top five tips on how to combat the colder months and how to keep your skin healthy, glowing and moisturized. Many of you may think the secret lies strictly with what products you use but it's going to take a bit more than that and some other tricks to keep your skin rosy-cheeked and full of life.
1. Tip #1 starts in the shower. During the winter months we love to take a nice long hot steaming shower to get the day started or even before bed to get nice and toasty before jumping under the covers. However tempting it may be, that hot, steamy shower may actually be the cause of your skin irritation. It’s actually better to take a luke-warm shower as opposed to a piping hot one. According to dermatologists, the hot water actually removes keratin cells that are responsible for skin rejuvenation and can dry out and irritate your skin leaving you all itchy and scratchy. Try taking a warm shower instead and minimizing your time in the shower to no more than 15 minutes.
2. As you step out of the shower, consider that thermostat setting. Is it set to a high temperature to battle the cold? Your thermostat setting could have a direct effect on your skin, believe it or not. Just like the steamy shower can dry out your skin, so can an overly heated house! The high setting can make your house even drier so dial it down to a temperature between 68-72 degrees. Pile on a couple more blankets and another pair of socks but your skin will thank you in the end.
3. Now that you’ve taken your warm shower and reconfigured your thermostat, let's dive into some skincare products we can’t live without during the winter. Dermatologists recommend switching to cream based cleansers during the chilly months because they are less likely to strip your face of necessary oils your skin relies on during the bleaker, sunless months. Our go-to is the Murad Cleansing Cream. This cream cleanser resurfaces your skin, unclogs pores and will never dry out your skin. The more you use this cleanser the more of a difference you will see in your skin; lightness, glowing and even-toned skin are all side effects of this miracle cream. Use morning and night for best results and trust us, you will only see the best results.
4. Now that we’ve cleansed, lets pack on some more moisture with the Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto Replenishing Hydrator from Clinique. Whew, that was a mouthful but it's so worth it. This gel-cream is like a much needed glass of water for your skin. It's a product you can feel your skin drink up and that’s why we use this product now more than ever. This product absorbs ultra quick and is ideal for day and night use. It will not leave your skin oily, it's not greasy and it's not too watery either. Rather it gives and maintains moisture and is ideal for any and every skin type.
5. Now we arrive at our last tip which might surprise you. We often think our skin doesn’t need protection from the sun in the frosty months, but we’re very wrong to think that. Our skin needs protection rain or shine, overcast or clear and we often neglect that protection during winter. Well, not any more! There’s no excuse after you read this article to go outside without wearing SPF, in fact it's crucial that you do because whether you see iit or not the sun is still there. During these frigid days we use Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. Not only is it SPF 30 but it's also super moisturizing and we can use all the moisture we can find these days to keep dry, itchy skin at bay. While we’re protecting our skin from the sun we’re also giving continuous hydration to our skin and it leaves our skin smoother and healthier looking. What more can we ask for during the winter?
Skincare goes much deeper than just the products we use. It's our environment, what we put in our bodies and then what we feed our skin. During the winter months we have to go into overtime to protect our skin and keep it healthy and glowing but it doesn’t have to be so daunting once you’ve found the right products. Then it's just showering properly, adjusting that thermostat and keeping that moisture coming and before you know it Spring is here and we have to change our regimen all over again. But until then, use this guide wisely and you’re on your way to healthy skin.
