What We Can Still Learn from Gossip Girl 13 Years Later

Yes, you read that correctly. There are still things to be learned from the teen drama Gossip Girl over thirteen years later since the CW classic was aired. If you don’t know already Gossip Girl was a dramatic television series following the lives of Manhattan’s elite teens. Serena van der Woodsen and her bff Blair Waldorf find themselves caught up in the privileged lives they lead on the Upper West Side. Drama, sex and even murder ensue as these trust fund babies find their way from high school to college and beyond. For six seasons we fell in and out of love with characters like Serena, Blair, Dan, Nate and Chuck...did we forget anyone? Oh, right, Gossip Girl. The mysterious narrator that seems to know a bit too much about the lives of these spirited young adults, but we won’t spoil the identity of who Gossip Girl really is, you’ll have to find that out for yourself if you haven’t already watched the series.

We’re not here to discuss the weekly plot lines that this show is so good at writing, even if sometimes it's truly bad, but we want to highlight the show’s contribution to fashion and what we learned from Ms. van der Woodsen and Ms. Waldorf themselves. Truly, it was a remarkable time and the show solidified itself among the likes of Sex and the City when it came to costume design and really marked a generation of flashy, maximalist style. Here’s three things we learned from the CW drama Gossip Girl.

The first thing we can’t help but notice when watching Gossip Girl is the accessories. Hair scarves, chokers, bangles and layered necklaces are abundant throughout all six seasons of this teen drama. Everything has movement and texture, down to the belts, tights and earrings. Serena and Blair are best friends and they share a love for fashion that is unmatched, yet both of their personal styles differ greatly. On the one hand, Serena’s accessories of choice range from contemporary to classic while Blair has a flair for the preppy and more eye-catching of ensembles. Either way, this pair of best friends showed us that when it comes to accessorizing, sometimes more is more.

From school to grabbing a coffee to solving a false framed murder, these girls never neglect their heels. Who do these teens think they are wearing stilettos and pumps to 5th period, Carine Roitfeld?! Regardless of the occasion, the young women in GG are always clad in the most dazzling heels whether its an open-toe or knee high boots, we quickly caught on to the fact that heels make every outfit that much more glamorous. BFF Blair often traded her pumps for flats, but when she did wear heels, we were guaranteed to be treated to some amazing color blocking. Perhaps our favorite Blair heels moment was when she paired complimentary colors like a bright green trench and strappy yellow heels to create an eye-popping ensemble for just another casual day of plotting diving drama no doubt.

Finally, we can’t end this article without mentioning the amazing hair that this entire cast has. Literally, even the men in this production have hair that us ladies would kill to know their secret to their luscious locks. Let’s start with Blair, always curled, her long brown hair is the shiniest on the show hands down. Maybe she has a bit of competition from her on-screen boyfriends Nate and Chuck who have the whole “just rolled out of bed, sex hair” trend on lock. Of course, Serena van der Woodsen, being the star of this drama series, takes the cake for having the most envious locks of them all. Throughout the entire series she sports long blonde loose curls that look so effortless and go with every outfit possible. As the seasons progress, we found that our hairstyles mimicked those of Serena’s as well; the messy ponytails and the glamorous up-dos at various galas, and the list goes on and on and on...Her curls were as bewitching as they were graceful and we never could get the look quite as ravishing as she did but hell, we sure did try.

Nothing is as good as the original. With talk of the Gossip Girl series to be revived with a new cast and what we can only imagine to be newer, juicier plot lines, we aren’t convinced that anything will top the original Gossip Girl series that was introduced to us thirteen years ago. Will the accessories, shoes and hair live up to the challenge? The bar that was placed so high over a decade ago and still inspires us today will be a tough feat to match with this new revival. Nonetheless, we’ll be watching and paying close attention to the new trends this resurrected Gossip Girl will be serving. Until next time...
