What Moira Rose Has Taught Us
If you have any taste in entertainment at all then you’ve watched all six seasons of the show Schitt’s Creek and if you don’t then perhaps you’ve heard of the Emmy winning show that sweeped the Emmy’s winning multiple awards including Outstanding Comedy Series among four other awards. Among these awards, actress Catherine O’Hara won an Emmy for lead actress in a comedy series. We couldn’t be happier that Catherine O’Hara was awarded the much deserved accolades because her portrayal of the dramatic, self-obsessed Moira Rose is truly the highlight of the show.
Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian series created by Eugene Levy and his son Daniel Levy who also stars in the sitcom. The premise of the show is that a wealthy family is forced to leave their lavish lifestyle and relocate to a town called Schitt’s Creek which they had purchased as a joke but they now live in the town’s run-down motel. The series follows the family and their adjustment to living with no money and no luxury and we see how this wealthy family acts and behaves without their previous riches. Our main character we’re looking at today is Moira Rose. She is the mother of children Daniel and Alexis and the wife of Johnny Rose. She is a former actress, a “has been,” and leads a life full of drama, delusion and extravagant fashion choices. Every episode, nay, every scene practically we see Moira in the most outlandish outfits and wigs that are simply inappropriate for her now life in Schitt’s Creek.
If anything Moira Rose has taught us that black and white can never be boring. The costume design for Mrs. Rose must’ve been great fun because she never experiments with color but sticks to black and white ensembles the entire show. She has fun with texture, patterns and accessories to keep us surprised every episode and wondering what Ms. Moira is going to wear next. Whether it's fingerless gloves from Chanel, fishnet Proenza Schouler tights or a cabaret outfit inspired by Liza Minelli herself, Moira finds herself in the most glamorous get-ups. While her character sticks to the same color palette of blacks and whites, the outfits never feel repetitive and we learned how to use accessories such as jewelry, statement bags and fierce heels and boots to add variety to an all black and white look.
What else could we possibly need if we’re taking notes from Moira Rose herself? Well, we need that confidence that Moira exudes with every waking breath. Her confidence is obvious in the way that she dresses because come on who could wear a Raf Simons PVC dress in the middle of a grass field and not have confidence to match? Only Mrs. Rose could, but if we want to even begin to think about rocking some of these bold looks we need to take a lesson out of Moira’s book and have that same level of unashamed grit. Moira is unapologetic and she rarely admits when shes’ wrong. Instead she has that very special talent of twisting the truth and making it work in her favor. Moira is a woman who draws on her dramatic vigor and uses it to create stories to get her out of tough situations. Naturally, she can also think on her feet in tough situations and utilize her imagination in ways we only wish we could. Oh, the things we would have Moira Rose negotiate for us!
Moira Rose initially comes off as a woman who is delusional when it comes to her style. We laugh every time she enters a room because it's always something new with this woman. A new wig, a new hat and a new problem. Yet as we work our way through the series we actually begin to have respect for her swag. From Moira we learn that it's only partly about style and the rest is pure confidence. You can have a great outfit but without confidence, you’re nothing, but if you have confidence you don’t need an outfit to be the best dressed in the room. Sadly, Schitt’s Creek is over after six seasons and we don’t have anymore Moira content to feed our creativity. However, even though the series is laid to rest, Moira’s memory will live on in our closets.
