What is “Barbiecore?”
Unless you live under a rock or shall we say under Barbie’s dream house, then you’ve probably heard about the new phenomenon called “Barbiecore.” So what is Barbiecore exactly? Well it’s been spurred from Greta Gerwig’s much anticipated movie about, well, Barbie herself. In the fashion industry, brands and designers have really capitalized on this new trend which involves a lot of pink, just to say the least.
Barbiecore is a relatively new aesthetic that draws inspiration from the iconic Barbie doll and the aesthetic of the 90s. It is characterized by bright, bold colors, kitschy accessories, and nostalgic nods to the 90s. The Barbiecore aesthetic is centered around the idea of embracing femininity and girlishness. It often features pastel colors, glitter, and an abundance of pink. Clothing items associated with Barbiecore include oversized graphic t-shirts, mini skirts, denim jackets, and high-heeled shoes.
Barbiecore also incorporates playful and kitschy accessories, such as hair scrunchies, butterfly clips, and heart-shaped sunglasses. It is also common to see Barbie-themed accessories, such as earrings or necklaces featuring the iconic Barbie silhouette. The Barbiecore aesthetic has gained popularity on social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram. It is often associated with body positivity and self-expression, as it encourages people to embrace their femininity and express themselves through their clothing and accessories.
So, what does Barbiecore look like in real life and on the runways? We’ve seen brands and designers really have fun and elevate the Barbie themed look and there’s a few key trends we want to highlight. For one, pink latex. Think Versace’s 2022 collection with sky high platforms and skin tight latex leggings but in hot pink. It’s like Barbie but Barbie as a no-mess taking girl boss. We also noticed that with this trend you really have to go all out. Think all pink tweed sets with matching pink pumps and pearl necklaces or hot pink catsuits with boots to match. Remember the two core pillars to this trend is the electric bubble gum pink and to really take your feminine girly side into overdrive. We also like how even Barbie’s hair is often inspiring these Barbiecore looks. High ponytails and slicked back side swept bangs are a recurring hair theme and don’t be shy to add on hair accessories like satin hair bands and pearl or rhinestone encrusted clips.
What do you think of this trend? Is it here to stay or fleeting much like balletcore and cottagecore? We think that this trend of dressing like a real life Barbie could get tiresome pretty quickly but we’re going to have our fun embracing our ultra girly (and pink) side while it lasts. Come on Barbies, let’s go shopping.
