We’re Leaving These Trends in 2023

2023 was a big year for trends. It seemed like each month we were greeted with a new fad that came and went just as quickly as we saw it on Instagram and tried to recreate it ourselves. Ballet Core, Mermaid Core and Coquette were among the top contenders for trend of the year and makeup trends like mocha makeup and strawberry girl had us all heading to Sephora for new products. On the one hand we’re advocates for sustainable fashion and investing in garments that are classic and hold up against any fast fashion trends that come our way. However, there’s no denying that with each introduction of new trends, it’s an opportunity to reinvent ourselves and try on a new hat of some sorts. Here’s our favorite trends we tried in 2023, and ones that we wouldn’t also mind carrying into 2024.

For starters, the Mermaid Core and Barbie Core trends dominated most of this year and it’s largely in part due to two box office hit movies coming out this year. Barbie and The Little Mermaid ignited thousands of IG posts and TikTok videos of women and girls sporting their bubblegum pink skirts and blazers as well as metallic and glitter outfits. However popular these two trends were, they’ve had their time and would feel misplaced and outdated going into the new year. Barbie and Ariel, you were fun while it lasted but we’re leaving you in 2023. Another trend that reigned supreme was Ballet Core and Coquette. We found that while both of these soft feminine trends were cute, they became a bit too costume-y. Leg warmers, sheer skirts and ballet flats became the foundation to Ballet Core and hair bows, peasant tops and skirts were staples for Coquette Core. We’d like to keep the essence of soft feminine dressing that each of these trends offered, but if we had to keep one and say goodbye to another, Ballet Core would be here to stay for all of 2024.

One trend that we really appreciated this year was Blokette dressing. Combining high low pieces, sportswear and vintage feminine and romantic pieces created the Blokette trend. Seen on stars like Bella Hadid and Iris Law, this trend was great for making use of what we already own in our closet and challenged us to take items we wouldn’t usually wear together and make a modge podge of an outfit into something unique and fabulous. Long maxi skirts, Adidas Sambas and soccer jerseys paired with diamond hair accessories and oversized purses are the key foundations to this look. We’re taking this trend into 2024 because it doesn’t feel dated and can be customized and remixed into something new each day. What trends are you leaving behind in 2023?
