Tips For Anti-Cakey Foundation

Let’s face it, we’ve all fallen victim to having a face full of caked on makeup whether it was intentional or not. Cakey foundation refers to the heavy, clumpy appearance that can occur when makeup sits visibly on the skin instead of blending seamlessly. Safe to say most of the time it was unintentional but hey there was an era (ahem, early 2000s) where it was a “vibe.” However, those days are long behind us but now that the weather is warmer, it’s easier to fall prey to cakey foundation application that will only be melting by midday. But fear not because we’ve got a few expert tips to ensure that you never make this mistake again...intentionally or otherwise.

First, you’re going to want a well prepped canvas, shall we say. Meaning you’re going to want to make sure that your skin is cleanse, toned and properly moisturized before you apply any kind of makeup. You want your foundation to glide over your skin rather than stick to it, so make sure you use a hydrating primer before application and to make sure you let it sit on your skin for proper absorption for a few minutes before applying your foundation. This will guarantee your foundation to stay on your face where it should be.

Next, you want to remember that less is more. Start by layering on a small layer of foundation and blending it out to assess the coverage you want. Similar to when we paint our nails, we don’t start with a big slob of nail paint and call it a day; we gradually layer on our foundation in a similar way until we achieve the coverage we want. The tools we use are also a big part in achieving our desired look and coverage. Use a wet blending sponge to dab and blend product onto your face or a clean, dense flat top brush to blend out your product.

The component that probably matters the most and is the most effective is to make sure that you’re using the correct formulas as well. Opt for lightweight, breathable, and water-based foundations, especially if you have oily or combination skin and avoid using thick, heavy formulas that can settle into fine lines and pores. Additionally, consider investing in a hydrating setting spray to lock your makeup in place while maintaining a natural glow. This will help your foundation blend seamlessly into your skin, leaving you with a flawless and cake-free complexion.
