The Skinny On Skims

It's about time we address a serious topic that everyone has been talking about. It's something that's being discussed in the media and we feel like we need to comment on it. Yes, you already know what we’re going to say...SKIMS. Yes, Kim Kardashian’s brainchild of shapewear. Sheesh! Calm yourself what did you think we were going to say? ;) Skims, the shapewear brand that Kim Kardashian released a year ago has taken over the internet providing shades for every skin tone, sizes from XXS to 4x and additions of pajamas and waist trainers, the world of underwear has been dominated by KKW. We tried out a few of these products for ourselves to see what the hype was about and here’s what we found.

For starters, we ordered the Sculpting Bodysuit. It’s offered in nine different shades but we decided to try a size small in the shade “onyx” which is a deep black shade. First off, the price alone is extremely reasonable considering the market of shapewear. We added this bodysuit to our cart and it only set us back $62! The product is described as a bodysuit that, “holds in your core, shapes and lifts your butt and provides support for your chest.” Check. Check. Check. We love that this body suit is not a thong bodysuit but has a full back and that the edges are seamless but they absolutely do not roll. Since we chose this black shade we wear it under most t-shirts, button downs, sweaters and we even like to wear it on its own with a pair of casual jeans and simply use it as a top on its own. Scrolling through the reviews of this product and you will literally only see four or five star reviews and that includes even our own review of this bodysuit.

The next two items we ordered were similar, they were both bras. One was a triangle cut and the other a scoop neck. We ordered each in two colors, a similar black shade to match our bodysuit and the other a cream color to go under our lighter color tops. The cotton jersey material is unbelievably soft. We unwrap it from the box and it feels like something you want to feel all over your body all the time. Like most bras, there are adjustable straps for both styles, an elastic under band and provides as much hold as expected from bras of these styles. We appreciate that while wearing these bras, we only experience comfort. The band isn’t constricting, they’re tagless and we forgot for a minute that we were even wearing a bra because they are that soft. The 90% cotton blend, we imagine has something to do with this and for that we’re thankful because these two items are machine washable and we don’t have to worry about them losing their shape or softness.

Our third item was definitely a gamble. We were skeptical and unsure about the actual function of the product. We figured that we had already had good experiences with our previous purchases that we would go ahead and ordered the much talked about, Kardashian guaranteed item that is the Skims Waist Trainer. When we heard “waist trainer” we were thinking corset? girdle? Here’s how Kim herself describes the product.

“This hourglass waist trainer from SKIMS sculpts perfectly to accentuate your body’s natural curves. This seamless sculpt waist trainer is a wardrobe essential for shaping your waist, and helping you achieve your ideal silhouette.”

Scrolling through the reviews and we found so many different women with different uses for this product. Some women who had recently had a baby loved to wear it under their clothes because they felt it cinched in their waist and boosted their confidence in their post-baby body. Others were handicapped and used it for back pain. There were a fair share of women who wore under their dresses or tops when they went for a night out and some who were into waist training found it useful as well. For us, we felt that when we wore it we experienced that same bit of confidence. As Kim herself would say, the waist feels snatched and we felt like it improved our posture dramatically and that we walked more self-assured. Would we wear this everyday? No. Could we? Yes. The waist trainer comes in two shades, clay which is a neutral color and onyx which is the same deep black that is the same shade as the bodysuit we mentioned at first.

Kim out did herself. We were skeptical when we first heard about Skims, not going to lie. She even recently released a line of shapewear for pregnant women which includes tummy supporting shorts to ease the discomfort of carrying a tiny human and maternity bras and breast feeding bras. We love that Skims is all about being inclusive of all women of shades, sizes and needs. For us, KKW is 3 for 3. Every item we tried delivered what it said it would and that's what you want from your shapewear. There’s no frills and no surprises, just good quality comfortable materials, a variety of shades and sizes and there’s something for every woman. Thank you Kim!
