Our Favorite French Beauty Tips
French beauty has long been coveted as the most chic makeup and skincare. Even though it appears to be so simple and effortless, why does it always feel like it’s so complicated to achieve? It’s probably because we’re overthinking how simple it actually is and we end up fussing it up with all the added extras that we’re used to using in traditional American beauty. However, we’ve got a few tips to master this classically chic look and luckily they are all actually as simple as they sound.
When we think of French makeup we think of a classic red lip. The secret about French beauty is that the women treat makeup as an extension of their expression, it’s a part of them and not something that’s added or made to be the focal point of their look. For example, we may apply a liner to make our lips look fuller or our lip “pop,” but instead take a cue from the Parisians and simply blot on your favorite shade of red using your finger or a lip brush or small shadow brush to apply your lipstick. It gives a lovely, light blotted look and feels fresh and easy.
Another French beauty look we love is their “just got out of bed,” appearance. Tousled hair and texture is key to this and opposed to our American standard of “perfect hair,” which is styled to near perfection, this is much simpler (and faster). A few key tips are to stop washing your hair every day and opt for dry shampoo for volume and texture. Use a lightweight hair oil and stop blow drying and using heat products on your hair everyday and try to let your hair air dry for a natural look.
Finally, the French are proud of their scent. Yes, perfumes are big in French culture and finding your “signature” scent instead of using two or three various scents is key. Think of things that inspire you such as nature or nostalgic scents and go from there. As always, keep it simple and as long as you do that, you’ve got classic French beauty down.
