Oh, So You Have Nothing To Wear?
We’ve all been there. Getting ready to leave for work, prepping for a date or sometimes just a run to the grocery store. We wake up, open our drawers or enter our closet, take one look and it hits us, we have nothing to wear. Oh how we fret, how we stress! How could it be? We have so much, too much clothing to begin with, yet we’re still coming up short. Nothing seems to match, nothing seems to “go” so we tear through our wardrobe like the Tasmanian Devil and still, nothing. But that’s not true is it? There’s always something. There just has to be.
So, how do we go from nothing to something. We have to get creative and we have to think outside the box. Because you can’t say that in all of those drawers, in all that closet space or even in the dirty clothes pile that you can’t find anything to wear. We have a few tips to get you unstuck and out the door whenever you have that dreadful, sinking desperation of not having anything to wear.
1. Seek Inspiration
Sometimes you need some outside help and that’s okay. Most of the time you’re simply thinking too small and you’re used to what you usually wear and seeking outside inspiration can get you out of your head and into your closet. So, where to seek this guidance? For one, you could grab your phone, open Instagram or even TikTok or your favorite influencer/stylist and see what’s being worn. Here, on Style Sonata we have so many great tips, many great lists and articles about how to style denim, leather, boots, etc. The list goes on and on. So, try to get some good ideas, they’re all a link away.
2. Old Clothes, New Ways
We are often so used to wearing our clothes in a certain fashion. We all have a signature style and that’s great but we can get stuck in a “style rut” if we don’t get creative with our clothing. For example, a skirt could make a great tube top for a night out with the girls. An oversized silk scarf can be a great accessory tied around the waist, worn as a skirt or even fashioned into a top. That belt you usually wear with those jeans could go great wrapped around the waist of an oversized blazer. Get creative with layering. We often have such one-dimensional outfits and forget that pairing and layering can really transform an outfit. We also say here on Style Sonata that the devil is in the details, so get into your accessories that you don’t wear everyday or that you only wear to weddings or on birthdays. You have to be willing to think outside the closet.
3. Stick to What You Know
If all else fails, and we’re aware this is contradictory to what we just stated above, but you can always stick to what you know. Look back at what you wore the week before or refer to an old Instagram post where you absolutely loved your outfit and then recreate it. If you don’t have time to get creative as we previously stated, then just go back to the basics of what you already know. You can’t go wrong because your previous self obviously liked what you wore, so “present” you should too. This can save you lots of time and worry and is a reliable strategy to fall back on when you’re in a bind. Sometimes the easiest answer is the most simple one. In this case seeking inspiration online, getting creative or simply recycling looks can be the easiest way to remedy the “I have nothing to wear,” dilemma.
