Meghan Markle’s Style Is Iconic
Meghan Markle. Oh so many, many things come to mind. Her marriage, her journey, her subtly but always tasteful remarks about political and social issues. Who could embark on a covert mission with British Vogue’s Edward Enniful to edit an issue of Vogue for months without anyone even at the publication knowing about it? That’s what happens when you get into- well not into bed, but into the business of fashion with Meghan Markle. Hearing Edward Enniful himself speak about the experience at the Vogue Paris Fashion Festival felt special. The dedication Markle gave to the issue Forces of Change was right on brand for her and Enniful’s sentiments about her professionalism and passion were endearing. And that’s how we think of her as endearing. That’s the funny thing about royals, they’re very discreet, private and keep us wondering, what are they like when they are lounging at home? Okay, just us who think that? Oh well, moving on.
What we do know and in case you’ve been living under a rock, is that Meghan Markle is a fashion icon. You will not find one photo of Markle that isn’t being analyzed through the lenses of millions of people who have become entranced by her style. Why? What is it about her approach to fashion that has us obsessed? Us included. Markle is intentional and she made that known when she defied the royal house when they told her to keep her opinions private. Dignified, she said she would use her voice for the voiceless. We believe this intention, motivation and compassion is part of what makes her a fashion icon. The other part? Well that’s just great f*cking taste. We look for things, like a Cartier bracelet worn in a video or that she has worn her hair with a new part or that she carried a Stella McCartney clutch. First step of being an icon: the rest of the world’s obsession with what you’re wearing.
Dresses, halter tops, skirts, practically anything that Meghan Markle has worn has only skyrocketed the aforementioned brands. In many cases the pieces themselves sold out after Markle was spotted wearing them at an event or even on the street. Infatuations such as this show that Markle is a status symbol and for all that she represents people want to embody that in some way and what better way to do so than to dress like the woman herself. Now, for the sake of sounding repetitive, but we did tell you so Meghan’s go-to item? A classic white shirt. It goes with everything and Meghan is a clear example of that. Everything Markle wears seems to fit her perfectly, and that’s no mistake. Markle is aware of what lengths suit her, the cut of a dress or a skirt and she is an expert on how to master formal to casual looks. Still, what has us crazed? Looking at dozens and dozens of photos we see a woman who is poised, who is real and not a prop and someone who is engaged. Even for us Americans, she’s a figure that's admired and someone we defend.
Okay, so clothes sell out and sales skyrocket after Markle wears them. Check. She is loved by millions and is also casually a magazine editor, which also solidifies her as a fashion figure. Check. She knows her brands, her colors, her cuts and her own personal style. Check. She is basically in control of all of our shopping habits and choices, but not only that she is currently in the top-ten of most influential dressers. So, there’s that. Check. Here’s what we are really excited about, Markle’s fashion icon is none other than Vogue Paris’ Emmanuelle Alt, the leader and epitome of Parisian style combining comfort and chicness alike. Iconic French inspiration. Check. After we look at this list and have checked our boxes, what the essential component for an icon to have is confidence. Meghan Markle has remained visually kind, caring, warm, strong and confident. She has had her private life exposed, become a mother and faced adversity. As we all know, you can be dressed in the best designers, stilettos six-inches tall, a face that’s beat by Pat McGrath herself, but what’s the essence? The essence is the purpose and the motivation, and even some mystery. The mystery, the unknown is intriguing and that's why millions want to emulate Markle because they want that je ne sais quoi. She makes the clothes, they don’t make her. She’s calculated but familiar, she’s determined but ordinary and at the same time she feels intimate. A style icon isn’t about the number of years they’ve put in to showcasing good taste and it's not i want what she’s wearing, but it's about the essence that fills the garments and commands the attention.
We have a few garments and accessories we’d like to share with you inspired by Markle herself. Markle loves a classic button down, so when in doubt, pull it out! Eileen Linen Button-Up Shirt is a classic fit for any casual occasion where you just can’t seem to find anything to wear and if you really need a casual look, simply roll up the sleeves. Meghan loves a good pencil skirt and she also loves to play with texture, so this Commando Snake Embossed Faux Leather Pencil Skirt is a good recommendation we think Markle herself would approve. Its form fitting, falls below the knees and has a high waisted control top. A great item to even style with a button-up shirt. Fall is fastly approaching, and just like Meghan you’re going to need a coat to complete your look. Inspired by her mid-calf grazing coats we suggest the Avec Les Filles Double Breasted Wool Blend Coat. Available in pink sand and black you can certainly have fun with color while keeping warm and chic just like Markle herself.
