Makeup Moment
By our observations, makeup trends have really come a long way from where they were a year ago. Heck, even three months ago we saw a drastically different approach to makeup being worn on Vogue cover stories, Instagram stories and in streetwear style. Glitz and glamor a la facial gemstones and neon eyeshadow seemed to dominate 2022 along with a touch of goth and dark romanticism towards the tail end of the year which gave us a nice segue into what we’re seeing nowadays.
One trend that we can’t seem to escape and aren’t sure if we really want to is the bleached eyebrow trend. Stars like Julia Fox have really pioneered this trend that doesn’t cater or bow down to the traditional beauty standards of before. Last year it was all about brow lamination and having the thickest and fullest brows, but now we’re seeing the return of the 90s/Y2K skinny brow. Add some bleach for about 20 minutes and voila, you’ve achieved the hottest brow look to come from 2023 thus far. We like this trend because it’s super bold and feels high fashion but with everyone seemingly jumping in on it, we’re not so sure how original it feels anymore but hey, we’ll try anything once.
Last year, and let's face it, many years prior, contour ruled supreme. It was all about using contour sticks and bronzer to carve out the sharpest cheekbones and snatching our faces. Whereas we still want those defined facial features, there’s a new member dominating the makeup chat room: blush. Blush used to be traditionally applied to the apples of our cheeks to give some color to those cheeks but now it’s actually used as lip color, eye shadow and when applied correctly can even be used to contour. With blush sticks and blush wands dominating makeup brands, it’s even easier (and quicker) to apply blush on the go to achieve a flush but defined look. Choosing the correct shade is the easy way to go but we’re also having fun experimenting with corals and purple shades as well.
Typically, we Americans like to have our lip liner and lipstick combo to create a beautiful pout. Using a liner helps keep our lipstick in place and also to define or over define our lips for a more fuller looking lip. It seems that French girl glamor has now influenced a new look for lips. The blotted lip or the blotted pout is a fun new approach to applying our lip color. Use a lip stain or even a lipstick and lighting brushing it over your lips to create a faded, subtle color or take your lip liner, line your lips and simply rub your lips together to achieve a quick, but chic look. We personally love to use a lip stain to achieve this look and take a small dab on our finger and press into our pout, plus, a lip stain lasts all day. Choose a color slightly darker than your natural lip tone or go bold with a deep red to really tap into how the French girlies are doing it.
These three trends have already made a bold entrance into the world of makeup looks but we expect them to really blow up this summer and beyond. Which trends have you tried or will be trying soon? Let us know which of these are here to stay and which ones should get the boot.
