Incoming: Bomber Jackets

We can’t stop thinking about jackets, jackets, jackets. Especially, the bomber jacket. We can’t help but notice them after all they are all over the runway and our Insta feeds. Did you see the closing look at the Vivienne Westwood show this fashion week?! Yes, it was a bomber jacket. If it’s good enough to be the wedding look at the Vivienne Westwood show, then it’s certainly good enough to be our spotlight jacket this winter.

Bomber jackets are generally oversized, puffy coats that have industrial pockets and heavy zippers. They usually come in canvas material but we’ve been seeing a lot of satin and leather options too that we think are super chic and are a cool feminine take on this traditionally masculine jacket. In fact, it’s only in recent years that bomber jackets more suited for the female silhouette have been made. They are slimmer and cropped shorter for a better fit but still have a slightly oversized look which is kind of the whole point of the bomber jacket.

The bomber jacket was originally worn by WWI pilots, and were heavily insulated and extremely durable and even though now we wear them for more fashion focused reasons, we like that they are still generally very warm and cozy making them the ideal jacket for winter. This Women’s Utility Flight Bomber Jacket from Levi’s isn’t quite as industrial as fighter pilot’s bomber jackets, but it’s certainly much more chic. With single chest pocket and a single side zipper pocket on the arm, this sleek bomber jacket features simple silver hardware for an updated approach to this classic coat. It’s slightly oversized so we’re wearing this with our favorite sweatshirt layered underneath for optimal warmth.

Another score from Levi’s is this Women’s Faux Leather Bomber With Laydown Collar. We are obsessed with this mash-up combining classic leather and the bomber jacket silhouette. You have probably seen this style of jacket a lot recently on celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Rihanna and for good reason. Leather is such a classic, traditional material for the winter and combined with this casual bomber shape makes it a great styling piece to pair with jeans, leggings and even layered over a dress. If you’re not completely sold on the idea of wearing a pilot-inspired jacket, then this is a great option for a more chic and sophisticated look.

Rodarte is known for their ultra feminine use of florals and luxuriously delicate designs and materials so when they made this Black Satin Rose Embroidered Bomber Jacket we had to have it. This elegant black satin bomber is embroidered with Rodarte’s signature rose patches on each breast and features that letterman jacket stripe detailing on the cuff and hemlines. This elevated interpretation on the bomber jacket is a long way from what WWI pilots had in mind when they first thought of the bomber jacket, but for us it’s just what the doctor ordered. We’re styling this bomber over a long maxi dress and pairing it with our favorite pair of combat boots for ultimate winter cool girl style.

The bomber jacket was originally meant to keep pilots insulated and safe from extreme weather conditions back in the day. Today it’s still keeping us warm but really freakin’ stylish at the same time. We’re not sacrificing warmth for fashion this winter, and neither should you with these three amazing bomber jackets. Which one are you rockin’ this winter?
