Here's a Kick In The Fanny!
Every so often there comes an accessory, a trend or a movement in fashion that evolves and takes on a life of its own. For example, cowboy boots, choker necklaces and charm bracelets. Remember when that last one almost became a status symbol? Each of these “fads” have become real parts of our cultural wardrobe today, meaning they’ve integrated into becoming everyday accessories like a bracelet or a headband. Then there are those that specifically mark a time in history. When we even hear the mere name of the item we picture high cut leotards, spandex and power suits. Well, come to think of it, not much has actually changed. If you haven’t picked up on my clues, I’m referring to the fanny pack.
Now the fanny pack has almost become the ultimate “cool-girl” accessory just as it was back in the 80’s and 90’s, but now there are so many variations, styles, sizes and brands that have taken the pack to a whole other level. It seems like not too long ago the fanny pack had a negative connotation, you know like it was a lame “mom”accessory. Something you would see suburban moms keeping their kids gummy snacks and SPF while at Disneyland. Well we’re here to tell you that is NO LONGER the case. In fact it's just the opposite and the plus, you can still store the necessities like your credit card...or fruit snacks.
There are so many ways to wear this functional bag, in fact we think it may be one of the most useful items to come out of fashion. Other names for this garment are bum bag, waist bag or hip sling but for the purposes of this conversation, we’re going to stick with good old fanny packs. Now, just as many names three are for the pack, there are just as many ways to wear them. One, is the traditional around the waist. We personally like to sport an oversized blazer and throw one around our waist to cinch our figure and play with the hi-lo style. Another way is to swing that bummy bag to the back or the side of your waist. Belt bags such as the Gucci Embossed Leather Dual Belt Bag are great for wearing on the hip because the two leather compartments make it easy to adjust and we also love the 70s throwback monogram which is appropriate for this timeless accessory. Another popular way we like to exhibit our fanny pack is by wearing it in a cross-body style and this way you can wear it in the front or across your back. Either way you wear it, you’re still hands-free and chic.
We like a larger belt bag like the Tumi Alpha Bravo Kelly Sling Pack. It has multiple compartments, it's great for women on the go, and if you have children it's a chic alternative to what our mothers were sporting in the 80’s. The Tumi Alpha Looks sleek and modern but on the inside there’s five compartments more than willing to hold any essentials you may need. If something more discreet, on-trend and less bulky is what you’re looking for then we recommend the Madewell Leather Belt Bag. This bag is the perfect size for lipstick, your phone, keys and credit cards. That’s it. Perfect for cocktail parties, gallery openings, bar nights and in general no-fuss occasions, and it fulfills our final suggestion for the many ways to wear a fanny pack, over the shoulder! Since this bag is so petite and almost microscopic, you can sling it over your shoulder like a traditional purse and switch up the whole fanny pack game altogether.
Is it even a “fanny pack” anymore? We mean, with the versatility in this whole “bum bag” game that's truly caught fire, is it even what it was when it was all the craze decades ago? I either hear, “oh that was a trend from the 80s, it's nothing new,” or, “wow I didn’t see that making a comeback!” Well it did, or it never left it just evolved, we still can’t really tell. Either way, no matter how you wear it or what you decide to put in it, the fanny pack is leaving our backs sweat-free, leaving us hands-free and most importantly keeping us stylish while doing it.
