Essential Items for Your Closet: Part Two
Okay, last time we chatted about essential items for our closets we learned we can never have too many of them. Having multiple versions of a classic white shirt, blazers and of course black ankle boots is never a bad thing. In fact owning different styles can provide you with various looks by just using these three pieces. So, I promised to return to this topic to share my other essential items that I believe we should all own so we’re prepared for any occasion whether it’s work or play. Let’s dive in!
I’m starting this “part two” with a personal favorite. I mean, I can’t own enough of this item and even though it is so basic it can be a real thriller. I’m talking about the slip dress. For me, I always gravitate towards black because that’s just the way I’m wired but I do own a couple of cream and beige ones. This piece is the definition of versatile because you can style it in so many ways. You can opt for the basic satin style and pair it with heels, boots or sneakers and instantly change the viibe from casual to dressy to sexy. You can add a belt or a corset and change the silhouette immediately or you can add a denim jacket for a modern, contemporary 90s grunge look. I like to take a hint from style icon Carine Roitfeld and wear my lace lined slip dress with a pencil skirt with a high slit so you can see the detailing peeking through. There are infinite possibilities with this garment and they are a home run every time. It’s a great piece for those days where we “don’t have anything to wear.”
Some of you commented and reached out and asked about denim. Similar to previous items on this list, there's no real “wrong” way to go about denim but I’ll share my go-to wash and styles for some insight. I tend to gravitate towards the straight cut boyfriend jean in a light to medium wash. I like lighter washes because they just go better with practically anything and make your look seem fresher and cleaner, there’s not a lot of fuss. I gravitate towards the relaxed boyfriend look because it’s the most comfortable and sometimes I like to roll my cuffs up depending on the shoes that I’m wearing or the look I’m going for. Denim can be overwhelming to shop for, but keep it simple and wear what makes you feel good. Right now I’m wearing the Original Ripped High Waist Ankle Boyfriend Jeans from Frame and they are distressed, light wash jeans and the perfect loose fit.
My next item is more on the casual side but it's still an essential, but you may not find it on other “essentials” agendas. It’s the hoodie. Or shall I say any pullover crewneck sweatshirt. For me, I prefer a crewneck sweatshirt because my hair is too long and I don’t appreciate the way my hair gets caught up in the hood, but to each their own! So why is the hoodie/crewneck an essential? Think about its function and every other item on this list. For one, it can be styled with every item from the slip skirt to the white shirt and the blazer. Adding in another item like the sweatshirt only elevates your outfit. Now for its function, it keeps you warm in the colder months and on crisp summer nights while also allowing another opportunity to show your style. For example, I love my “Be a Nice Human” graphic crewneck from Suburban Riot layered under my oversized leather blazer. It’s a little hint at my personality and upgrades my look a bit. With this being said, I think that we’re going to need a part three to continue building our “essentials” list. I still haven’t touched upon flats, accessories and my go-to makeup “musts.” What do you guys think? Have I missed something? Sound off below and see you next week ;).
Sincerely,
