Brigitte Bardot Style Guide

French style is timeless. It’s classic and effortless and almost impossible to recreate without looking like you're trying too hard. How can such a seemingly simple style be so hard to capture? We can learn what we can by skimming French fashion magazines or even traveling to Paris and sitting in cafes observing French style in real time. What if there was an easier way? An easier way to learn from the best, and to really see firsthand what French fashion is all about. I’d like to introduce you to none other than the Brigitte Bardot.

Okay introductions probably aren’t needed because she is an icon. Her flirtatious pout, her infamous hair and easy style can be recognized anywhere and has garnered her the title of an international sex symbol. So what is the Bardot look really made of? When we think of Brigitte Bardot, thigh high boots, trench coats and neck scarves come to mind. We want to share with you our picks for these three essential items to recreate your very own Bardot ensemble.

Let's start from the bottom up with boots. Brigtitte Bardot was often seen in the coolest boots, whether they were knee high or thigh high, they were always chic. A pair of boots can really change the direction of an outfit; it can take it from sweet to sexy or from casual to cool. Our go-to, most reliable pair are from Stuart Weitzman. The “Harper” over-the-knee black block heeled boot is our choice for a thigh high boot. This boot lengthens our profile and has a stretchable shaft for optimum comfort. The color “Black Napa” is a deep black that is guaranteed to go with almost any mini or midi skirt, shift or slip dress and any other Bardot-esque ensemble.

Next up, the trench. A trench coat is a must have staple item everyone should have in their closet, especially if they’re aiming for classic French fashion. Again, a great item to elongate one’s figure and virtually goes with anything that already exists in your closet, the khaki trench coat is classic. Of course when one thinks of classic trenches, one thinks of Burberry. The Kensington Belted Trench from Burberry is a worthy choice but we’re also into the Kate Spade midi trench which mimics the Burberry trench at a fraction of the price. Both are belted classics with a rich khaki coloring and are more than able to fill that “trench coat” role in your life. Great news, the khaki trench goes great with black, leather, thigh high boots ;).

Finally, we’ve worked our way to the top. They say the devil is in the details and for us, it's in the accessories. Brigitte Bardot always kept it very mod with a headband, a necklace or her signature eyeliner. For us, her necktie scarves added a sense of innocence that played well with her sex appeal. Small and not overpowering the neck

scarf actually adds a lot to an outfit, meaning, it literally completes the look especially where French fashion is concerned. We want to have a bit of fun with color and print for this part of our outfit, even the French can appreciate a Skull Silk Scarf or red heart motif scarf from Alexander McQueen. These thin neck scarves are perfect for throwing on with our leather boots and khaki trench. They draw the right amount of attention while adding a little je ne sais quoi to an ensemble. To complete this Brigitte Bardot inspired look all you need is some eyeliner or a bold lip, but not both. The key to French style is to always look just a bit undone and to have that au naturale element. Nail all of the above you just might give Brigitte a run for her money...or at least you can try. Happy shopping, and bonne chance!
