Tameca Davis Talks With Us About Achieving Work-Life Balance in Hollywood's Entertainment Industry
This Aries is driven, high-functioning and the original author of "work hard, play hard." She has spent the last few years building a career in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, and recently completed her MBA at Malibu's beautiful Pepperdine University.
For those of us who've ever lived in, worked in, hustled in LA, we know the city has a certain pace and vibe that's not for the faint of heart. Tameca walks us through life in the entertainment world, a few nuggets she's learned along the way, and the importance of connecting with your purpose in the midst of it all. There is never a dull moment with Tameca, and we thoroughly enjoyed catching up with her. Without further delay, let's dive in!
1. Describe yourself in 3 words.
Determined. Progressive. TaMaZiNg.
"I DECIDED TO GO INTO ENTERTAINMENT BECAUSE I LOVE A CHALLENGE ... I LOVE MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY, AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT ENTERTAINMENT SEEKS TO DO."
2. Tell us a bit about the work you do and why you chose that field.
Currently, I work at one of the largest entertainment studios in the world doing Strategic Planning and Forecasting. I oversee both digital and physical accounts to decide how those clients will manage and present our content to the public, and in turn project how much money our studio will make! If you’ve ever scrolled through your TV and rented your favorite TV show to watch or bought a new movie, I may have had something to do with that! Before I started working in entertainment, I did strategic planning in the corporate retail world for companies like TJX and BCBGMAXAZRIA, helping to bring the latest fashions to your closet.
I decided to go into entertainment because I love a challenge, I love numbers, I love making people happy, and that’s exactly what entertainment seeks to do. I grew up in Philly where there’s a completely different mentality from what you see here in LA, so the fast-paced environment that I work in allows me to combine both my street smarts and my book smarts into the ultimate package. My job is really about taking risks, coming up with new ideas, and figuring out new ways to approach situations, and that’s something that I’ve been doing since I was a kid.
3. Any big plans or projects for the rest of 2019?Up until now my entire career has been driven by corporate success which, while rewarding, has taken me further away from my core passions, like writing and being able to connect one-on-one with individuals in a more influential way. I’ve been working to realign with my passions this year, so 2020 is definitely going to be exciting. I’ll be expanding into more entrepreneurial ventures and transitioning into working more for myself, so keep an eye out!
4. What advice would you give to your 15-year old self?Your time is the most valuable thing you own. Be very selfish with it!
"SOMEONE ELSE'S OPINION OF ME DOESN'T VALIDATE WHO I AM ... IF I WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO RECOGNIZE MY WORTH OR POTENTIAL, THEN I MAY NEVER REALIZE IT MYSELF."
5. Best advice you ever received?
The best advice I ever received came from my mother at a young age. She told me nobody could ever block my blessings or define my potential, so let my work and actions speak for itself. Someone else’s opinion of me doesn’t validate who I am and if I wait for someone else to recognize my worth or potential, then I may never realize it myself. So, don’t wait for that, believe and have confidence in yourself always.
6. Happiness is …?
Waking up and feeling truly free. Free to be who you are, free to love, free to express yourself, and free to spread that feeling on to the next person. I believe happiness inspires, it motivates, and it truly touches others.
7. What is your biggest pet peeve?
My biggest pet peeve is definitely when people don’t keep their word or don’t keep it 100. Just keep it real and don’t overpromise.
"I AM THE GIRL WEARING THE SEQUINED BLAZER WITH MATCHING DR. MARTENS IN THE LINE AT TRADER JOE'S BUYING COOKIE DOUGH."
8. Describe your go-to style. My go-to style is usually, what I like to call, “the long short.” The long short style is the concept of long and short pieces being worn together. An example would be wearing some sort of layering piece like a floor length vest or blazer and complimenting that with either a mini skirt or shorts, and over the knee boots to close the gap.
When I’m not sporting “the long short” you can find me wearing something that’s matchy-matchy and over-the-top. I am the girl wearing the sequined blazer with matching Dr. Martens in the line at Trader Joes buying cookie dough.
9. You feel most beautiful when …?I feel most beautiful when I’ve just stepped out of the shower. No make-up, no clothes, just me, my smile, and my bomb post shower vocals.
10. What does fashion mean to you?To me, fashion is a form of self-expression and through fashion you’re essentially making a statement about who you are, and if you haven’t totally come into your being yet, you may be making a statement about who you want to be. You’re walking into the world saying, “Hi World! I’m here! Take it or leave it! I am who I am....At least for this particular moment in time or day of the week.”
