Zuni Cafe
A delightful and airy street-side cafe, perched on the bustling market street in San Fransisco, was the perfect little reprieve for a day full of errands. This discovery, of course, is courtesy of Bunny, who has an eye for these things. We’re loving everything about this chic little oasis, tucked behind a dramatic corner storefront in an imposing triangular building.
Large windows, high ceilings, rustic-chic decor define this cheery space. As you walk in, you are greeted with an expansive bar and an oversized bouquet of flowers atop a piano, right in front of a grand staircase. A doting contingent of hostesses, wait staff and bar tenders stand by on the ready.
Around the corner is an oyster bar that marks the entrance to the open kitchen. After a little chit chat with the manager and a handshake to the chef, we’re given a behind-the-scenes tour of it all. The highlight — a look inside the wood-fired brick oven, which is working overtime for the lunch-time rush. We were loving the heat … we did not want to get out of this kitchen. What a treat.
There are so many scrumptious bites to choose from on the menu that day (the menu changes), and we get little glimpses of them as we squeeze past white-clothed tables on the way to our window seat upstairs. There was a roasted chicken plate with a fresh bouquet of greens which was clearly a hit that day. Skinny fries and gigantic gourmet burgers seemed to be the second choice. We opted for soup and a bright salad to begin, followed by a lamb and herbed couscous dish. We add a little bubbly because … it’s 5 o’clock somewhere. We end with a flourless chocolate cake because … yolo. We both agree that this was a stellar choice and a must-come-back.
