Becca DeCoud
We had a chance to catch up with Becca DeCoud earlier this month for our usual short-but-deep musings. We were really thrilled to be able to pencil this in amidst busy travel schedules and the usual rush that the New Year brings. Becca is an MBA student in the pioneering field of Fashion/Luxury and Business, and has some real nuggets of wisdom to share about life and relationships. She has an open and genuine energy, with unique perspectives that make you think. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Becca. You will too. Please, enjoy.
1. Describe yourself in 3 words.
Playful. Perceptive. Ambitious.
"FASHION AND LUXURY BRANDS ARE EXPERIENCING A GROWING NEED FOR BUSINESS-SAVVY TALENT. YET THE TYPICAL PATH TO A CAREER IN FASHION OR LUXURY HAS NOT HISTORICALLY INCLUDED BUSINESS SCHOOL."
2. Tell us a bit about the work you do and why you chose that field.My background is in merchandising, but I’m currently a graduate student at NYU Stern. I’m in a program called the Fashion & Luxury Focused MBA, and it’s the first of its kind. Today’s fashion and luxury brands are experiencing a growing need for business-savvy talent. Yet the typical path to a career in fashion or luxury has not historically included business school. The new Fashion & Luxury MBA program was created to fill the gap.
3. Any big plans or projects for 2020? Graduating! And finding a new job that sits at the intersection of retail and tech innovation.
4. What advice would you give to your 15-year old self?Stop spending money at Starbucks, learn to code, and be nicer to your parents. They make tons of sacrifices every day. They may bother you, but without them you would be lost.

5. Best advice you ever received?If you're having trouble forgiving, remember it's a gift to yourself.
6. Happiness is …?Making my own schedule!
7. What is your biggest pet peeve?Steering wheel drums. And by that I mean when I’m sitting in the passenger’s seat with my dad and he has to bang the steering wheel like he’s a member of whatever band is on the radio!

8. Describe your go-to style.Think Tracee Elliss Ross meets Chrissy Teigen meets Meghan Markle. I love a good cute casual look with a flirty yet eclectic vibe.
You feel most beautiful when …?When I have a face mask on and cucumbers over my eyes. It’s actually not a cute look at all, but there’s so much beauty in taking the time to press pause and treat yourself.

What does fashion mean to you?
I recently read a book by Tanisha C. Ford called Dressed in Dreams, and she answers this question perfectly. She says ‘Through our clothes we can do our own form of world-making, imagining possibilities beyond what our current status says is our reality.’
