How to Combat Winter Skin
As winter rages on, so does our battle against dry, cracked and dehydrated skin. If you’re anything like us, then you probably tend to just focus on moisturizing your visage but probably tend to neglect your lips. It's understandable because after all your lips are a relatively small part of the human anatomy but does that make them any less worthy of ultimate hydration? Dry lips in the winter are very common due to the dry, cold and windy air outside and combined with central heating indoors, that can leave your lips less than kiss worthy. When exposed to elements such as these, the keratin in our lips can weaken and as a result you have cracked, dehydrated lips.
So, how can we combat these less than desirable consequences of winter weather? We have a few tips and products that will cure your winter pout and leave you with luscious lips all season long. Check ‘em out.
Before applying any balm or moisturizer to your lips we suggest using a lip scrub. A lip scrub is great for exfoliating your lips and getting rid of any excess dry cracked skin to leave your lips a clean slate for absorbing any additional lip products. This Hanalei Sugar Lip Scrub uses Hawaiian kukui oil and shea butter to hydrate and seal in moisture in your lips. Its exfoliating property is Maui cane sugar granules which gently massage away any flaky skin on your lips and leave them feeling soft and supple.
Another great lip exfoliator is this e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator which comes in easy on-the-go packaging that you can easily apply on your lips without getting your fingers dirty. This lip scrub is packed with vitamin E, jojoba oil, avocado and grapeseed oil. Simply apply in a circular motion and wipe away with a tissue then follow up with your favorite lip balm. This treatment leaves our lips feeling rejuvenated and hydrated and we love it’s easy to use packaging.
A great lip product for dry skin is lip oil. This Kopari Coconut Lip Gloss uses 100% organic coconut oil, fatty acids such as lauric and capric acids, vitamin E and plenty of antioxidants to ensure a moisturized pout. We like this lip oil because it also contains lots of anti-aging properties which aren’t only great for your face but for your lips as well. Another lip oil worth mentioning is this Nooni Korean Lip Oil which is packed with vitamins A, C, and E as well as raspberry fruit extract and antioxidants to combat the bitter winter bite. This oil instantly moisturizes and leaves your lips looking plumper than before and with a slight berry red tint.
Now sometimes our lips can be so damaged we have to resort to the tried and true products that have worked to soften lips for decades and decades before. When our lips need the heavy lifting we turn to products like Vaseline and Aquaphor. These petroleum based lip treatments are great for the winter because they lock in moisture and these products penetrate deep into your lips for the maximum hydration. We like to keep a few of these Aquaphor Lip Repair Sticks in our purse, car and around our home to make sure we always have one on hand. We also like this Vaseline Lip Therapy Pack Bundle which comes with three mini vaseline pods in cocoa butter, rosy lips and of course the original Vaseline flavor.
Finally, it’s always good to have a lip mask on rotation. We like to keep one right by our bed in our nightstand so we can remember to apply our lip mask and wake up with soft supple lips in the morning. This Burt’s Bees Lip Balm Moisturizing Overnight Treatment hydrates, conditions and reduces the appearance of fine lines in the lips and also helps to restore your lips natural moisture barrier. We also love this Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask Scrub. This mask consists of squalene and Japanese peach that helps restore lips to their former glory. Simply apply before bed and there’s no need to rinse off so just fall asleep knowing you will awaken with a gorgeous and glowing pout.
