A Trend We Want to Stay

Trends. They get kind of a bad rap sheet, but why? Why is it that when a coworker or that one family member calls us, “trendy” it feels a bit...well insulting. Maybe it feels a bit shallow, because it suggests that we don’t have our own style principals and we’re just following fashion what the masses create. Trends are fleeting, here one day and gone the next, yet strangely enough they can be cyclical. They resurface every few years or even every few decades as if giving us a chance to forget them only guarantees we will welcome them when they come back. Fashion is a never-ending rollercoaster except instead of people hopping on and off the ride it's trends like bell-bottom jeans and corsets. Yet still we have to give credit where it’s due, there are some trends that we welcome back with open arms and open wallets as if to say, “I’ve missed you and you’re coming home with me!”

We don’t know about you but over the last couple years we’ve noticed that big trends can come in small packages and create an obsession like you’ve never seen before. We’re talking about the micro-mini phenomenon. I mean come on ladies you really haven’t noticed? Well, if you haven’t noticed we don’t blame you because these teeny tiny accessories have some extremely minuscule measurements. With that being said, we’re still obsessed and we’ve realized that there can be an exception to the whole “trendiness being a negative” rule. There are some trends that can be promoted to style staple and we think the micro-mini is one of those trends that we would like to stay

"Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live."

—Gianni Versace

Looking back a few years, five to be exact, we aren’t surprised to see one of the first micro- minis to come into production under the creative eye of none other than Karl Lagerfeld. His design of the mini bag for Fendi was tiny but juxtaposed with oversized keychains, but little did we know that back then these shrunken satchels would create a big wave and we can’t talk about the micro-mini without giving credit to expert Simon Porte for the Jacquemus brand. These bags appropriately and cleverly named le chiquito measure 12cm x 6cm and if this isn’t on trend enough for you there’s an even smaller version, le petit chiquito which measures 8.5cm x 5cm and to put that into perspective, a few quarters can fit snugly inside this $250 coin purse. What is it about these mini bags that have created a not-so-mini craze? They’ve already been on the scene for about five years so maybe they are here to stay.
